Major Motion Cycling Club © was formed in 1975 at Leimert Park in southwest Los Angeles, CA. Our club name “Major Motion” honors the memory of Marshall W. "Major" Taylor, a pioneer in American cycling. (b: November 26, 1878; d. June 21, 1932)
Marshall “Major” Taylor (11/26/1878 ~ 6/21 /1932) was an African American track cyclist at the turn of the 20th century, when cycling was the most popular – and lucrative – sport in the world. In 1899 Taylor set a new world record while winning the World Championship in the standing mile, the premier cycling event of the era. He followed this victory by winning the American Cycling Championship in 1900. In his 16 year professional career Taylor raced in America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He set numerous world records and won 75 per cent of his races.
