Eavesdropper - Snippets From Overheard Conversations Around New York

Mete Erdogan "Eavesdropper" has always drawn and doodled as a kid and it's been his outlet ever since. He considered design as a legitimate career option in 2007 when he visited a Pixar concept art exhibition. Mete was studying journalism at the time because he didn't really know what else he'd be good at to make a living out of. The exhibition just showed him that there are so many applications for people who can imagine and draw; set design, characters, type and graphics, storyboarding, model making, the list goes on. Mete transferred to the design course at University and started learning the basics there. His first paid job was a poster for a burlesque club in Melbourne:

"They put on a show called 'Gorelesque' which satirized and sexualized the B grade horror movie world so I had a lot of fun with that. That continued to be a regular gig for me as they put on new shows every week. Then word of mouth got around, my client base built up and I still do artwork for that crew occasionally :)"

What inspires you?

My sources of inspiration always surprise me. You'd think it'd be in other visual art but I'll see a cool looking plant and come up with a color palette. I love listening to new music (Spotify's 'Discover' Playlist is an essential), playing xbox, traveling and good movies. I was in Sintra, Portugal late last year, it's just an hour out of Lisbon. It was like stepping into a Disney village. The castles were bright yellow, red, blue, pink. And there were these beautiful moss covered stone structures and gardens. It was amazing that an entire community committed to making a whole town look this good. It definitely gives you great inspiration for new colors and collaborations.

How has your work made a difference, do you have a fan story?

I think my work has been making a small difference to peoples' daily routines, even if it's just for a small grin or chuckle. But I did have an encounter with a fan who opened my eyes to the larger potential Eavesdropper could have to make a bigger difference. I was traveling around Europe and met this American girl at a hostel in Berlin who was a fan of
the project. She was passionate about human rights in which I really didn't know much about. She made a good point that Eavesdropper was about hearing things but it could also be about listening. It got me thinking about what charity collaborations Eavesdropper could do just on that idea. It's still an idea that needs work but I'm really glad I had that conversation with her.

Are there any big events coming up the audience should know about?

There are a few things in the works but still to early to talk about. However, I did just move back to NY after a 6 month sabbatical in Melbourne so I guess the big event right now is my return! Keep up to date with everything I'm up to at the Mete Design Facebook Page:; and you'll be the first to know about everything that's coming up in my world.
