Alexandra Marrero Interview

Where do you find your inspiration?

I sometimes find inspiration in the most unlikely of circumstances, but most of the time I get inspired by things, places and/or experiences that emotionally stir me.  Imagery can be very linked to storytelling, so I also find that movies (which is another great passion of mine) can spark my imagination. Especially movies with a fantasy element to them.

A wolf in sheep clothing, anyone?

What has been the best moment in your career?

I've had a couple of memorable moments that I feel have propelled me forward; but one of the first ones that come to mind was the first time I sold a piece to an art collector. Up until that moment I knew what creating art meant to me; but to receive such reaffirmation from others definitely expanded my horizon as an artist.

What is your ideal day?

I've always been a “night owl”, so I often stay up at night when I'm focused on creating art.  On that note, my ideal day would be one in which I get to sleep in and wake up with enough time to do what “I have to do” so that I can then focus my energy on what I love to do. ;)

Who is your role model?

My creative role models change often as I continue to evolve as an artist; but what I can say for sure is that I am drawn to artists (and people in general) who, are not only skilled, but are open to sharing their artistic wisdom with others. We are continually being influenced by the work of others; and to be part of that cycle and inspire others can definitely fuel even more and better artwork for the future.

What is your dream project?

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to create licensed artwork for Disney's WonderGround Gallery, Disney Fine Art or Disney merchandise in general.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

The best piece of advice I received from a professional make up artist I met during a flight to New York City, who was being flown in to work on a large commercial project.  She told me the best thing I could do is work hard every day, so that when opportunity comes knocking I am fully prepared to answer the door.

What's the single most important skill you've learned to be successful at creating art?

I find that my art comes from a more genuine place when I focus on creating because “I want to” and not because “I have to”. Some of my most compelling work was created in a moment where I've needed to process a difficult situation, and creating art became a helpful tool to help me cope.  So now I simply allow the way I feel to guide my process without overthinking things too much.

For what in life do you feel most grateful?

I am most grateful for having love in my life in the many ways that it presents itself.  Love is the driving force that keeps me sane and always moving forward. Knowing that there is more to life than what I do for a living helps me put everything into perspective when I get hung up on the little things.
