The Oluk Interview

When was the first moment you decided you wanted to be an artist?
I never thought I would become an artist. I always felt like a creative individual and I think I have been ever since I was a child...then one day, when I decided to bring my pixel characters to life for fun, I realized I was actually considered an artist...but only thanks to my followers who started referring to me as one...

Where do you find your inspiration?

My works are usually inspired by video games, films and cartoons (especially from the ‘80s); generally speaking, I love everything kids might find funny and interesting.

Kid at heart, fits right in with Modify :)

If you could work with another artist, who would it be? / who is your favorite artist?

For what concerns Pixel Art, I would have loved to work with the first artists in the history of pixel art...imagine...the thought process behind the creation of people through colored squares...and from those first colored boxes we got to today where we have amazing pixel art artists like Octavi Navarro who makes poetry with pixel.That’s right, there are many varieties of pixel art. Still, all the pixel artists have something in common, which is pixel art’s most fascinating feature in my opinion: the ability to give a pixelcolored, unconventional representation of the world.

What has been the best moment in your career?

The best moment in my career is the one I’m living now. It feels like a dream. People have been contacting me from all over the world to initiate new collaborations. I’ve been included in a few books, in a video game and soon there will be a 3d series featuring my characters. I am currently working on two big projects that I think are very important, one coming out at the end of this year and the other at the end of 2016...this all seems too good to be true, but please don’t wake me up!

Little Oluk figurines? We'll take 10!

What is your ideal day?

My ideal day? Ok, i’m about to exaggerate, ready? My ideal day would be a day in which I could divide the time I have at hand between my ladies (my wife and 3 daughters) and pixel would really have everything I need... ok Manolo, that’s enough daydreaming for one day!

Who is your role model?
My kids! ...maybe that’s why I have 3? :). I’m fascinated by the way they live and think...they give absolute priority to games, but especially me, they bring color to an unfortunately grey world...I feel like them and knowing myself, I would give more importance to a game than to a yea, if I had to choose a character to represent me on this specific topic, I’d have to go with Peter Pan!

                                                            aww so sweet!

If you could do anything, what would it be?
I actually have a list of things I would like to do...I wrote them down a while ago:
⁃ Turn Hannibal Lecter into a vegetarian;
⁃ Pilot a Jaeger;
⁃ Help Wil E. Coyote capture the Road Runner in Italy he is known as Beep Beep
⁃ Participate in the movie Monkey Island;
⁃ Visit Jurassic Park;
⁃ Have 3 daughters

Thankfully the last one came true, now I have to work hard to achieve the others as well!

Why do you create art?
I create Pixel Art because to me it’s like a game...The thing I like about all of this the most is to observe how people react to my characters...and that is with a lovely smile on their face! It’s nice to know you can make people smile with tiny colored boxes.

What art do you most identify with?
Videogames... esepcially those from the 80s... amazing! To me, that’s art! When I was a kid I would spend hours in game rooms and in front of the console I had at home...let’s just say I was a pretty good “Arcader” citing the film Pixels :)

How has your art changed throughout your life?
I have loved drawing ever since I was a kid. Initially, my dream was to become an illustrator, but I never managed to tackle that field. A few years ago I dedicated my time to vector illustrations entirely...but honestly, I didn’t exactly stand out...there are so many artists a lot more qualified than myself in this field. And then, by chance, I started testing my faith with pixel art in April 2014...there was a strike in the Termini train station and while I waited for the first useful train, I whipped out my phone and decided to download an app to make pixel art. So I downloaded it and began creating various characters, experimenting new styles, trying to find my own...and by mid July 2014, I drew a rabbit for fun ( From that moment an entire series of animals came to life until the creation of the characters thanks to which I stand here today...

What is your dream project?
My dream? The one I’m living right now...Seeing my characters on your watches, on clothes, turned into little figurines and...(I’m going to stop here..wouldn’t want to jinx myself)...please, never wake me up...Oh yea, and if I could, I would love to dedicate my working hours to pixel art...

What is the best piece of advice you have received?
“Game Over... Continue?... YES!” :P
