Ruben Ireland Interview

When was the first moment you decided you wanted to be an artist?
I don't consider myself an artist as much as I don't consider most of the people who claim to be one. But to answer the question, as most of the people doing something creative, I always did since I was a kid. There's no specific moment in which you decide, you just make things.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Many places. Movies, videogames, comics, people, nature or art. I have many interests and in a certain way each one of them have an influence in what I do.

If you could work with another artist, who would it be? / who is your favorite artist?

I have many favorite artists. If I had to name one I would say Rockin' Jellybean. But I wouldn't be good enough to work with him.

What is your ideal day?
Being traveling somewhere, maybe the first day after you arrived and everything is new and ready to be discovered and experienced.

Why do you create art?
Well, considering my first answer, I don't think I'm making Art, but whatever that is, is something that simply spills out of you, you have little or no control on it. I have to admit the idea of quit doing what I do comes to me more and more frequently lately. Somehow I kept going, but I think one day I'm gonna say "enough". There are many reasons behind this and I don't wanna bore anyone to death with them.

What art do you most identify with?
Pop surrealism, pop art and tattoo art (which definitely is an art form).
How has your art changed throughout your life?
I struggled a lot to find a style and I still do. You can see a lot of different things in my work, simply because I like a lot of different things, and I'm influenced by all of them. Technically I think I got much better during the years.

What is your dream project?
I did many different things during my career, and I don't have a specific "dream job". A lot depends on how comfortable I feel with the concept, but it could be anything. I'm very interested in mobile games, though.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?
Very simple: believe in yourself and in your talent. And personally, I never follow this advice.
