When was the first moment you decided you wanted to be an artist?

I was pretty young and in Elementary School I was taught how to cut out snowflakes. I really liked cutting very intricate shapes into the paper and they came out pretty well. My older sister thought they were really good and she wanted to show her Middle School art teacher since I would have him as a teacher the next year. Some reason the feeling that someone else might like the art that I was making was a rush for me and I believe I was hooked from then on.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I’m pretty typical: Family, Music, Life, Internet, etc etc.
Or pizza? We find lots of inspiration in pizza

If you could work with another artist, who would it be? / who is your favorite artist?

I’d have to say I would like to work with Phil Jones (http://www.phildesignart.com/). I know of him through the community at Threadless.com. I think of him as extremely creative and I bet it would be great to work with him in person. When it comes to favorite artist that is tougher. I enjoy the work of many artist each for different reasons. Some artists that have a big influence on me would include Georgia O’Keefe, Barnett Newman, Keith Haring, and Barbara Kruger.

What has been the best moment in your career?

When I think of my career I tend to look at it in different sections. Early in my career I had some time in advertising which had some great moments, including winning a Bronze and Gold ADDY Advertising Award. In my current career path as a Proprietary Designer in the golf retail market the best moments are different. Being able to design products that get sold in stores is a great feeling. When a customer buys something I designed because they like how it looks is always going to be the best moment. My artistic career away from work I would have to say the best moments would be 1. winning the Modify Watches design challenge (twice)  2. being an artist on the MAD Magazine Spy vs Spy 50 Anniversary custom figure project.(http://www.madmagazine.com/blog/2011/07/07/spy-vs-spy-custom-toy-project-brandon-ortwein), and 3. having my t-shirt designs published in 2 separate books.

We dig the Indiana Jones inspired figure!

What is your ideal day?

Being able to enjoy the day with my family. Not too hot, Not too cold, Not too rainy.

If you could do anything, what would it be?

Control Time.

Why do you create art?

Selfish answer: I like the attention. Non-selfish answer: People need cool stuff.

Both answers sound good to us!

What art do you most identify with?

Abstract.

How has your art changed throughout your life?

Well I have become a better illustrator over the years, but that took lots of practice. I always feel I could do better if I put in more time and effort. (at everything)

What is your dream project?

Being able to design a product for a major corporation that would be sold all over the world.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

kern!

We’re not sure what this means, but we like it and will probably start to go around yelling it at people!
