When was the first moment you decided you wanted to be an artist?

When I was a young girl I loved to make art, but had no idea I wanted to be an artist per say. Then years ago I got very sick, and art came back into my life full swing and saved me as I worked through a decade of illness. Art was my savior when I almost died. Now it’s ingrained in who I am.

Such an inspirational story!

Such an inspirational story!

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration has come from my personal childhood past and also the illness I spoke of above, but also the world around me. I know it’s cliche, I find inspiration everywhere.

If you could work with another artist, who would it be? / who is your favorite artist

I can say I do not have a favorite artist, I think there are so many fabulous and talented people it would be almost impossible to pick. As for working with another artist, I wish I could have met and worked next to Frida Kahlo.

What has been the best moment in your career?

One of the best moments in my career is going to places to guest lecture as an inspirational speaker inspiring people to overcoming adversities like child abuse, illness, bullying, mental health complication and bring awareness to various taboo subjects matters such as suicide.

Her fabulous work also inspires people to think about and bring awareness to taboo subjects

What is your ideal day?

Being with my dogs, creating things and being surrounded by the people I love.

Who is your role model?

My role model are all those people out there that never give up, that get back up and keep fighting to survive. Life can be beautiful but also very brutal.

We love this. Aunia, you are our role model!

If you could do anything, what would it be?

If I could do anything, I would travel the vast world we live in. I would also like to be a contributor to bettering the lives of animals and helping those fighting for this need by opening an animal sanctuary for homeless animals.

Why do you create art?

I create art as a catharsis. It’s something personally that I need like air or water - to really feel that I am living. It helps me work through emotions, connect with people and also brings a narrative to my life in a visual manner.

"Obscure Sorrow"

What art do you most identify with?

I identify with all art, I feel very connected to all things creative even if I might not understand them or aesthetically enjoy them.

How has your art changed throughout your life?

My first stuff was very dark and encompassed a very muted color palate. Now, after overcoming the previous illness I discussed my work will always have a dark undertone but the characters and color pallets have changed dramatically. It’s obviously my life has changed how my work has evolved.

We love the bright background of “Paint My Reality”

What is your dream project?

My dream project was to own a gallery and curate shows, which I am doing right now with Alexi Era Gallery. Now I need to come up with another one…….

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8. - Japanese Proverb
