May 16 is Wear Purple For Peace Day

Did you know that May 16th is Wear Purple for Peace Day? Show your support for peace of all kinds by wearing purple on May 16th! In honor of Wear Purple for Peace Day, let's take a look at the world's top peacemakers and their thoughts living a peaceful, meaningful life. Mother Teresa She was the essence of peace and love. She is no longer with us, but her legacy lives on. She is of Indian and Albanian descent and was born in Albania on August 26, 1910. She taught in Calcutta India and was shocked at the poverty she saw. It was to influence her work for the rest of her life. She started organizations with the Catholic Church that were for "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." "If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other." "Peace begins with a smile." "Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God - the rest will be given." Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was a South African revolutionary who opposed apartheid, which is the government-sanctioned separation of races. He was put in prison for a long 27 years, before finally being released. Once he was out, he became the first black South African to become president. Despite being over 95 years old, he is still active in the political arena. "If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner." "I dream of the realization of the unity of Africa, whereby its leaders combine in their efforts to solve the problems of this continent. I dream of our vast deserts, of our forests, of all our great wildernesses." "There are many people who feel that it is useless and futile to continue talking about peace and non-violence against a government whose only reply is savage attacks on an unarmed and defenseless people." Martin Luther King Jr. A gifted speaker and the leader and founder of the civil rights movements, he dedicated his life to change and equal rights through peaceful means. He was prosecuted by government and non-government alike. He was responsible for a breakthrough in ending segregation. Unfortunately, he did not live to see his legacy. He was assassinated on April 4, 1964. "We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies." "An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity." "Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals."
