Modify Celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month and a great reminder to celebrate the important African American people and events in the history of the US, Canada, and the UK.  Modify is taking a trip thru "time" to highlight a few of the important people that have played a crucial role in our country’s black history and current culture, since this is an essential part of overall American history.

So, why was February chosen as the month of celebration? Carter Woodson, who is known as the Father of Black History, selected the month of February as the month to celebrate the role black people played in not only American history but world history as well. Woodson was a pretty amazing guy in his own right; he was the son of former slaves and the second black person to receive a degree from Harvard so clearly he understands the importance of education and preserving heritage. He picked February since two very important men who altered the future of black Americans celebrate birthdays during this month, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation back in 1863 which proclaimed that all those enslaved in the confederate territory were to be free forever; that action granted nearly 3.1 million of the 4 million people in slavery their freedom. Then in 1865 the 13th amendment was ratified which finally made slavery illegal everywhere in the US. Frederick Douglass, has a Valentine’s birthday and was one of America’s leading abolitionists. A former slave himself, Douglass went on to become a very influential author and the first African American to be nominated for Vice President of the United States. He was a strong believer in freedom for all, and spent his life as an activist for all people, including blacks, women, Native American, and recent immigrants. As an example of Douglass’ strong believe in equality he is often quoted as stating, “I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong”. Our ModiFamily is excited to celebrate this important month and the many influential individuals that are not only part of our past but also our future. Throughout February, we will be recognizing and celebrating the great men and women who impacted our country’s black history. We are excited to kick off this month to honor the men and women that have a role in our heritage so come along for the ride and celebrate with us. Just like Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “the time is always right to do what is right”.
