Thank You Pac-10; OR how we became a real business

Our first *major* order was through the Pac-10 athletic conference. We designed watches for the Fall Media Day in Los Angeles. All of the men's and women's basketball coaches as well as one player from each team would be there to answer questions in anticipation of the upcoming season. I'd never heard of Klay Thompson until that point. This was a weird occasion because I've long maintained that the only topic I could argue comfortably about was basketball and the NBA in particular. Who was this guy, and would I need to know about him before he declared for the draft?? I digress. The Pac-10 wanted some unique swag to give all the media members. I'm a history major, consultant and a MBA... pretty useless. Luckily we have Ashil Parag (our Design Lead) on the team (more about him in my next post...) He's a rockstar graphic artist with a decade of experience working in all sorts of media. Seriously, check out his work at He leapt (lept?) into action and created some wicked designs. Then our client had a brilliant insight - what about highlighting the "10" of Pac-10 in the upper left of the watch. Why there? Brilliant! Now we just had to get the watches to L.A. Easy-peasy except for my previously-favorite-now-least-favorite logistics provider with Brown trucks screwed up. Big time. I'm not even going to sheepishly blame myself. It was their fault. 100% their fault. They screwed up customs markings. They lost the package in a warehouse for four days. And when I tried to re-direct the package to L.A. (Delivery Intercept!) they couldn't tell me if the package was going to be delivered to Berkeley or to L.A. To which on my fourth phone call with the fourth different person I exclaimed, "You are the world's number-one logistics provider, how do you not know if a package is going to Northern or Southern California? That's right, I was so angry that I just wrote in Comic Sans. Long story short: I changed my ticket at 7am the morning I had to deliver the watches; received them in Berkeley; got stopped at the airport (what is that large package that's ticking in your bag?); made it in time; handed out watches; then saw Klay Thompson (!). And I'm fortunate because now I can giggle at:
