Creativity Explored - Featured Non-Profit Partner

Creativity Explored is a dynamic nonprofit art center and gallery where artists with developmental disabilities have been creating, exhibiting and selling their art for over 32 years. Located in the vibrant cultural and dining corridor that transverses San Francisco’s Mission District, Creativity Explored provides studio workspace, materials and mentoring by a team of professional artists, and exhibition space and career opportunities for approximately 135 studio artists per year. Creativity Explored establishes studio artists’ work as an emerging and increasingly important contribution to the contemporary art world.

Creativity Explored

When and where was the Creativity Explored founded?

The impetus for the founding of Creativity Explored was the passing of the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Act in 1969 in California, an act which defines the rights of persons with developmental disabilities and establishes a service system to meet the individualized needs of consumers and when appropriate, their families, throughout the state. Believing that all people have the ability to create, and that visual artistic expression is a viable means to enhance personal identity and growth, Florence Ludins-Katz and Elias Katz founded Creativity Explored in 1983. Our second studio site was opened in 1995 to provide adults with severe disabilities an opportunity to create visual art.

Are there any big events coming up the audience should know about?

Join Creativity Explored for Art Changes Lives 2016 on June 15, 2016.
For this annual celebration and fundraising event, Creativity Explored is honoring long-standing collaborative relationships with partners Sam Mogannam and Anne Walker of Bi-Rite, and Michael and Jacky Recchiuti of Recchiuti Confections.
Art Changes Lives 2016 includes dinner, wine, and bidding on over 40 original artworks by two dozen Creativity Explored artists, plus special food, wine, and travel packages.

In Ripe (June 9 - July 20, 2016), Creativity Explored artists serve up a tantalizing smorgasbord of art inspired by food. This exhibition is a buffet of original drawings, paintings, and sculptures that feature a mouth-watering array of incredible edibles from colorful fried chicken to a bike made of pizza wheels.

Shapeshifting (July 28 - September 7, 2016), a two-person exhibition of artwork by Evelyn Reyes and Yolanda Ramirez, explores the transformation of shapes in a variety of colors and media.
Reyes works almost exclusively in the medium of oil pastel on paper. Her highly abstracted Carrots are a favorite theme. Perhaps inspired by her fellow artist, Ramirez also draws simple domestic subjects in colored pencil and graphite, but her style is less abstract and more stylized.
