Italia Ruotolo Interview

Posted,

Italia Ruotolo creates images in the world of pop art and art nouveau. She also says that "the contemporary man lives in a myriad of sensorial stimulation and is himself the product of continuing interlocution between the real and the mere appearance or mere fiction." We don't really know what that means, but it's definitely impressive. Just like her artwork. Read on here and be impressed!

When was the first moment you decided you wanted to be an artist?

That  moment coincided with the feeling of being in the world, I think I was about three years old. You know ,is not that one become an artists, artistry is a peculiar trait of  Being, as having the eyes or the hair of a certain color . I never thought of doing something else in life in order to live, I mean, have a "normal" job, because, let's be clear, this is not a normal job :)

Where do you find your inspiration?

There are  inspiring situations anywhere and everywhere if the mood is predisposed to catch and turn them into art. I don't need exceptional things to get inspired, just  empathizing with  the object  to feel  its inner beauty/energy and then return it to the world according to my feeling.

If you could work with another artist, who would it be?

Salvador Dali, certainly one of the most fascinating artistic minds of all time. Working alongside with him would be an aesthetical- hysterical - psychedelic travel to others dimentions of art.

What has been the best moment in your career?

So far was when Joe Dallesandro has chosen my work to its brand of t shirt. He is a living icon of pop art having been the muse of Andy Warhol. This made me really happy and satisfied.
What is your ideal day?

Ideally it would be: getting up early in the morning, take a swim or a meditative walk in the country and then in the studio  painting until the afternoon. Then reading, work out earing good music  and hanging out with friends at night ... actually, instead , it ends up more that I start to paint  and the work incorporates me into its orbit , so I can't get out of it until it's really necessary for unavoidable reasons.

Who is your role model?

My role model is the old style Dark Lady , a character looking like  vamp with sorceress Circe powers  ... let's say  that between Snow White and the Evil Queen I've always preferred the latter.

If you could do anything, what would it be?

I would love to direct an art school where classes were composed by children and elderly person, working together to build new projects and share their emotions .I'd love to see the magic and  energy developed by their personality, definitely teaching them  that art makes a difference in people's lives .

Why do you create art?

Because I have to! Something undefined grows inside me to the point I have to discover its shapes and exteriorize it. It's such a  primary necessity, I need to see my inner world concretized in the real space, if I don't I feel very bad!

What art do you most identify with?

Pop Surrealism

How has your art changed throughout your life?

I can not speak of a "change", because, through the years I'm getting  closer to understand what is my real spirit. What has changed is the technique that has become more communicative and precise. I started with graphic works  made using black ink, then I switched to watercolor and finally to oil, getting  gradually more and more realism.

What is your dream project?

I'd like to treat the visual part of a movie conforming it fully to my aesthetic. I would love to take care of aspects ranging from the  lighting to set design, from costumes to makeup.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

To study, study a lot, not only all about arts  techniques , but also history, literature and so on. Never forget that the paintings are made by brain not by hands.
